Local Services
Vero Beach has a great deal to offer the
visitor, and much of it is available within a very short distance of the yacht
club. To better acclimate you to Orchid
Island, the name of the barrier island on which the club is located, remember
that Beachland Blvd.
divides the beach shopping area. The shopping area encompasses Ocean Drive and
Cardinal Drive from Beachland south to Flamevine Lane with additional shops on
Ocean Drive from Beachland north to Date Palm. As you may have noted, the
streets south of Beachland carry the names of flowers alphabetically starting
with Azalea to Flamevine, and the streets north of Beachland carry the names of
trees alphabetically from Acacia to Date Palm.

Shopping
Specialty shops in the beach area will meet
most of your needs. You can have your hair coifed, drink your expresso, find
the perfect bathing suit or search out the trinkets and curios so popular to
travelers. You won't want to miss the Portales de Vero at the extreme southern
end of Ocean Drive at Flamevine. Here you can find examples of local art at the
Artist Guild Gallery, cards and other unique special occasion items at
Roundabout and dine at the renowned Black Pearl.
If you like collectibles, there are shops in
abundance, but for pure whimsy don't miss Bottalico on Ocean Drive South. If
your taste goes to the nautical, there are some very fine examples of painting,
watercolors and other art pieces at Admiralty Galleries on Azalea. As you
travel further north on AlA you will find Pelican
Plaza,
located on the west side. Here is the Village Beach Market on the corner and
the Bottle Shop in the Plaza itself. Further on you will come to the Village
Shops on the east side of AlA where you will find some very unique stores and an
interesting restaurant. Look for Bank of America or you may miss Village Shops
altogether.
Instead of listing all categories and
examples, the basic needs will be covered in this next section. The phone
directory and inquiry at the office will lead you to specific shops for your
needs.

Restaurants
It is difficult to list all of the twenty
some eateries that abound within the beachside area It is safer to ask a member
or inquire at the desk. You can get casual dining at Nino's, which is located
at Easter Lily Lane, or Jaycee Park Seaside Grill. If you want atmosphere and
fine dining, the Black Pearl at Portales de Vero, Disney Resort's Sonya's,
Pommadora and The Tides on Cardinal Drive. are all very fine. Then there is
the Ocean Grill at Sexton Plaza
which is a perennial favorite. If you are UNDER 65 and wish to toast the
setting sun a Ia Key West, then by all means try the Riverside Café located just
steps away from the club on the Indian
River.

Parks and
Beaches
As a visitor you have the option of doing as
much or as little as you wish. If your pleasure is for rest and relaxation,
there are several city parks available.
Three public parks front on the
ocean/beach. Jaycee
Park is at the north end of Ocean Drive, Humiston
Park is
at the south end of the Ocean Drive shopping area, and South
Beach is on the extension of Ocean Drive
beyond the Riomar Golf Course. All have picnic areas and children's play
areas. These beaches are also protected by lifeguards.
The largest, Riverside Park, is only a short
distance south of the club and can be approached either by crossing Beachland
Blvd. or taking the access road that goes UNDER the Barber
Bridge.
It has an abundance of picnic areas with charcoal grills, a few covered
pavilions, tennis courts, squash courts, jogging path and boat launching site.
It is also the entrance to the foot bridge that connects the park with
Memorial
Island,
a small island dedicated to the local men and women who died in service. People
may visit the island to meditate or just enjoy a moment of solitude. This same
road can be used to reach the fishing pier under the bridge, as well as the
Riverside Café.

Museum and
Theaters
Riverside
Park is
home to both Vero Beach Museum of Art, and Riverside Theatre/Children's Theatre.
The Museum houses three galleries: the
Holmes main gallery for traveling exhibitions, the Stark gallery/rotunda for the
permanent collection and the Schumann Florida Gallery that features local and
regional artists. Studios are available for classes as well as individual
study. The outside ceramic studio is the largest in the state and the expanded
educational offerings make the center the largest museum/school in Florida.
Riverside Theatre is actually three
theatres. The main stage is used for traveling performances by professional
Equity members, guest celebrity performers, Vero Beach Concert Assn., and VNA
travel film series. The smaller stage is used for more intimate performances by
apprentices and other non-equity performers. The Children's Theatre is used as
training by and for children who, with their parents, make up the largest share
of audience. A Professional Series has also been instituted specializing in
groups touring children's classics.

Attractions
Area attractions may take you away from the
beach to visit such places as the McKee Botanical Gardens located at 350 US
Highway 1 (794-0601) which recently underwent extensive renovations. Native
Florida flora are in profuse abundance in this garden that was formerly the
McKee
Jungle Gardens,
a popular tourist attraction of the early days of
Vero Beach.
The Environmental Learning
Center
(ELC) at 255 Live Oak Dr. (589-5050) is
both an educational facility for school children and a place where tourists and
nature lovers can enjoy and learn more about the ecosystem of Florida. Built on
a 51-acre site, it houses both flora and fauna including a butterfly garden.
As the ELC looks at our natural surroundings
on land, Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute studies the sea. It is located
at 5600 US Highway 1 north, near Fort Pierce (772) 465-2400. On 500 sprawling
acres of land along Indian River a staff of more than 300 scientists work to
unlock the secrets beneath the sea. Their fleet of submersibles not only seek
out nature's secrets, but have been used in other missions including diving on
the USS Monitor and finding the wreckage of the ill-fated Challenger space
shuttle.
The UDT-Seal museum is located at 3300 North
Rt. AlA in Ft. Pierce (772) 595-5845 for those wishing to learn more about an
interesting piece of military history. Seal training is still carried on in
various parts of the country, including the fixed position vessel on Seneca Lake
in upstate New York.
Citrus is a major industry in Florida, but
you also might be interested in the Florida Ranch Tour on the famous 18,000 acre
Adams Ranch outside of Fort Pierce. You may call (772) 467-2001 to make
reservations. You'll be glad you did.
So you see, your visit to Vero Beach can be
as exciting or relaxing as you wish, These are but a few of the many experiences
you can enjoy. If, however, you merely wish to kick off your shoes and rest on
the aft deck, be our guest. Our prized chef, Jerry, will make sure that you
don't go away hungry.
