Chartered in 1926, one year after the creation of Indian River County,
the non-profit, Vero Beach Yacht Club will be celebrating 80 years of
hosting boating and social activities for its 650 members and the
community.
November 17-18 will serve as the Gala Anniversary Weekend. On Friday
evening members will enjoy "The Shipmates Frolic", a Roaring 20's
themed dinner-dance hosted by the Shipmates, the Club's Women's
Auxiliary. Music will be provided by the legendary Paul Hubbell and
his band. Members will wear dress of the era and enjoy special
surprises including a Charleston Contest. On Saturday night the
members will attend the Past Commodore's party, a formal-attired
dinner-dance focusing on the Club's 80 year history. The evening will
be hosted by present Commodore, Edmund Davis and the Paul Hubbell band
will again provide the music. The very earliest members will be honored
for their many years of service. Additionally, an array of historic
Club photos and memorabilia will be on display depicting the past
history of one of Vero Beach's earliest organizations. It is of
interest to note that the Yacht Club actually ran the present Vero
Beach Municipal Marina from 1938 to 1970. Vero Beach Yacht Club was
one of the earliest members of the Florida Council of Yacht Clubs, the
organization comprised of 39 member clubs that monitors and supports
boating and other marine activities throughout Florida.
In preparation for the 80th Anniversary Celebration, an Afternoon Tea
was held at the Club for its most senior members to collect their
reminiscences of the earliest days at Vero Beach Yacht Club.
