Blessing of the Fleet

Blessing of the Fleet 2016

The Vero Beach Yacht Club, 3601 Rio Vista Blvd., conducted its Annual Blessing of the Fleet at 3:00 pm on Saturday December 10th, 2016.  Clergy representing various denominations conducted the blessing.

The procession and blessing was open to the public. All boaters in Indian River and adjoining counties were invited to participate in this long-held traditional ceremony, a tradition that began centuries ago in Mediterranean fishing communities. The blessing from the clergy was meant to ensure a safe and bountiful season and it was customary for boaters to drop flower pedals in the water as they passed the Clergy boat.

Participants  gathered at 3:00 pm north of the Barber Bridge between Intracoastal Waterway markers 137 and 139. VBYC Fleet Captain, David Johnson, coordinated the boats. Boat to boat communication was on Channel 72. After passing the Clergy boat, which was on the Yacht Club dock, boaters continued North past the Club before turning around and returning back to the ICW.

For further information about joining in the Blessing of the Fleet,  Captains contacted the Vero Beach Yacht Club at [772] 231-2211.

The date of the 2017 Blessing of the Fleet will be announced in the fall.
