Blessing of the Fleet

Blessing of the Fleet Planned at Vero Beach Yacht Club

The Vero Beach Yacht Club, 3601 Rio Vista Blvd., will conduct its annual Blessing of the Fleet at 3:00 PM on Saturday December 10th. Clergy representing various denominations will conduct the blessing.

The procession and blessing is open to the public. All boaters in Indian River and adjoining counties are invited to participate in this long-held traditional ceremony.

The Blessing of the Fleet is a tradition that began centuries ago in Mediterranean fishing communities. The blessing from the clergy was meant to ensure a safe and bountiful season.

Participants will gather at 3:00PM north of the Barber Bridge between Intracoastal Waterway markers 137 and 139. VBYC Fleet Captain, David Johnson will coordinate the boats. Boat to boat communication will be on Channel 72. After passing the Clergy boat, which will be on the Yacht Club dock, boaters will continue North past the Club before turning around to return back to the ICW.

It is customary for passengers to throw flower pedals toward the clergy boat as they pass.
